Experiments to Investigate Co2 Ocean Sequestration
نویسنده
چکیده
An international collaboration to investigate the sequestration of COz in the deep ocean was initiated in December 1997. The program is being funded by agencies of the governments of Japan, the U.S., Norway, Canada, and Australia; and Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) of Switzerland. The investigation comprises both experimental and modeling components. During the first phase of the program which runs through March 2002, a field experiment will be conducted in the summer of 2001 in which liquid COz will be injected through various nozzles at a depth of approximately 800 m in the ocean at flow rates ranging from about 0.1 to 1 kg/s. Data will be obtained to develop and validate models that can be applied to predict induced changes to sea water chemistry. This paper describes the planned field experiment and presents selected results from laboratory and modeling studies that have been conducted to support the field experiment.

Fate of rising CO2 droplets in seawater.
The sequestration of fossil fuel CO2 in the deep ocean has been discussed by a number of workers, and direct ocean experiments have been carried out to investigate the fate of rising CO2 droplets in seawater. However, no applicable theoretical models have been developed to calculate the dissolution rate of rising CO2 droplets with or without hydrate shells. Such models are important for the eva...
متن کاملDiffering methods of accounting ocean carbon sequestration efficiency
[1] Presently, much of CO2 fossil-fuel emissions are removed from the atmosphere through natural ocean uptake of CO2. Many schemes have now been proposed by which the accumulation of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere could be slowed with intentional further storage of CO2 in the ocean. Our review of the literature indicates inconsistency in whether ambient ocean carbon uptake is included when...
متن کاملDecarbonization and Sequestration for Mitigating Global Warming
Mitigating the global warming greenhouse effect while maintaining a fossil fuel economy, requires improving efficiency of utilization of fossil fuels, use of high hydrogen content fossil fuels, decarbonization of fossil fuels, and sequestering of carbon and CO2 applied to all the sectors of the economy, electric power generation, transportation, and industrial, and domestic power and heat gener...
متن کاملLimestone-particle-stabilized macroemulsion of liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide in water for ocean sequestration.
When liquid or supercritical CO2 is mixed with an aqueous slurry of finely pulverized (1-20 microm) limestone (CaCO3) in a high-pressure reactor, a macroemulsion is formed consisting of droplets of CO2 coated with a sheath of CaCO3 particles dispersed in water. The coated droplets are called globules. Depending on the globule diameter and the CaCO3 sheath thickness, the globules sink to the bot...
متن کاملSensitivity of sequestration efficiency to mixing processes in the global ocean
A number of large-scale sequestration strategies have been considered to help mitigate rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Here, we use an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) to evaluate the efficiency of one such strategy currently receiving much attention, the direct injection of liquid CO2 into selected regions of the abyssal ocean. We find that currents typically transport...
